The End of 500 Days of AI

Writing one new article about artificial intelligence every day for 500 days

This is the end of a project. I have written one new article about or related to artificial intelligence every day for 500 days.

My wife suggested that I should just write: the end, and leave it at that.

I think she is somewhat relieved that this journey is over, although she has been heroically supportive and patient throughout these 500 days.

My wife is very happy, and I am too!

Without love nothing is possible.

With love you can believe in what others deem too great to overcome.

I owe the greatest thanks to my wife.

A great deal of thanks also goes to my family across oceans and home.

From beginning to end

My first article on Medium was written the 3rd of June 2019:

One article every day until the 16th of October 2020, today.

All I have to say is that I am so grateful for everyone who has been there for me or read any of these articles.

There are quite a few people that have inspired me during this stretch of time, too many to name. Regardless, I made an attempt to think of a few, and I had some thoughts about this in article 499:

500 Days of AI complete

How did I structure my writing? I wrote in topical divides often incremented in 50 or 100 days:

  • 1–50 days # general;
  • 50–100 days # AI safety & climate;
  • 100–150 days # AI & international relations;
  • 150–200 days # national AI strategies);
  • 200–300 days # national and international AI strategies;
  • 300–350 days # AI & hardware;
  • 350–400 days # AI & inequality;
  • 400–450 days # natural language processing;
  • 450–500 days # general & reflection.

These topical divides were not absolute, and if other major news stories within the field of AI appeared or I got a novel idea I diverged from these categories when necessary.

Why why why

What happens going forward is not without consequence.

Our great technological progress is still constrained by planetary boundaries.

It is still configured within an ecosystem full of life.

Never think for a moment that your voice is not needed in debating AI.

Artificial intelligence is an aggregation of information and actions.

Your actions can change the outcome of what the output will be.
