A CLAIRE message on Corona
Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe & the COVID-19 Crisis
Holger H. Hoos Professor of Machine Learning at Leiden University and Chair of the Executive Board of CLAIRE sent a letter on behalf of the CLAIRE COVID-19 Taskforce sent an open letter to governments and the COVID-19 advisory panel.
CLAIRE was publicly launched on 18 June 2018 with a vision document signed by 600 senior researchers and key stakeholders in artificial intelligence, and the website, inviting stakeholders in artificial intelligence across Europe (and beyond) to sign their support. Currently it consists of 359 groups and institutes with over 21,000 employees in 35 countries.
CLAIRE open letter was addressed as follows:
The subject of the letter was levering artificial intelligence (AI) to help with the crisis.
Help was to be offered on a volunteer basis.
It mentions that AI has been helping to tackle the crisis in China, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. It argued that Europe can learn from these experiences and that leading scientists and researchers can help to help EU governments, health systems and public administration to cope.
The taskforce is led by Emanuela Girardi, Gianluca Bontempi and is supported by CLAIRE’s offices in The Hague, Brüssels, Prague, Oslo, Rome, Saarbrücken and Zürich.
Applications mentioned are:
- Data analysis.
- Robotics.
- Advanced manufacturing.
- Scheduling and resource management.
They show to a series of concrete examples.
- Intensive care data analysis
- Epidemologic data analysis
- Mobility data analysis
- Protein and molecular data analysis
- Open research initiatives (mentioning the COVID-19 Kaggle competition
Furthermore the distance monitoring, CT scans, detection of fake news, chatbots, 3D printing, robotics and more. European values and AI ethics.
CLAIRE argues that with the COVID-19 European team of Scientific experts (presented on the 17th of March) there should be an AI expert included to ensure the proper use of the technology leveraged in efforts dealing with the crisis.
They mention the need to include interdisciplinary expertise (AI) with life science competencies and implementation.
This is #500daysofAI and you are reading article 296. I am writing one new article about or related to artificial intelligence every day for 500 days. My current focus for 100 days 200–300 is national and international strategies for artificial intelligence. I have decided to spend the last 25 days of my AI strategy writing to focus mainly on the climate crisis.
